ZEDOARY (Curcuma zedoaria)

Zedoary, also known as Zedoary Root Tea is a member of the ginger family and a close relative of the spice tumeric.

The name Zedoary is derived from the Arabic name Zadwar, and the Farsi name Zedwaar.

It is native to the tropical and subtropical wet forests of India and Indonesia and was introduced to Europe by Arabian traders during the sixth century AD. Several varieties of Zedoary are used as an ingredient in curries. East Indian Arrowroot, or Curcuma Starch is made from the rhizomes of Curcuma angustifolia plant.

The Zedoary root is the eadible part of the plant, it has a white interior and a fragrance similar to mango, but its flavour is closer to ginger, with a very bitter aftertaste.

The beneficial part of Zedoary is its rhizome, the fleshy root. The rhizome has a brown skin and a bright orange, hard interior, and are dug in the autumn and winter months. They are then cleaned boiled and dried for storage. Dried Zedoary is ground to a powder and then can be stored in an airtight container for a long time.

Zedoary is said to aid the liver and spleen, invigorate blood and promote the circulation. The herb also stimulates production of digestive juices, improves the flow of bile and calms upset stomach.

Zedoary Tea, which is made by placing 1 to 1.5 grams of crushed or powdered Zedoary into a cup of boiling water. Zedoary Tea can be taken with meals or on its own.

Cautions: Zedoary has no side effects when used in normal dosages. but it is not advised to drink Zedoary during pregnancy. As any Herb and supplement, when taken in conentrated form follow the instructions on the label.
