NUTMEG (Myristica fragrans)

Nutmeg ia also known as Jatiphala, Nux moschata, Rou Dou Kou, Jatikka Jatiphala, and Myristica Jaiful. This fruit bearing tree originates from the India, Java and Sumatra area, and is now also widely grown in the West Indies.

NUTMEG Inside the fruit is a stone inclosed in a membrane (Avril). The membrane when dried is known as Mace.

The stone, its shell broken and discarded, yields the Nutmeg seed. The seed is ground up to produce a herbal spice with culinary and medicinal uses.

Nutmegs have a strong warm bitter aromatic taste, with a delightful aromatic fragrance.

Other common uses are as flavourings to toothpaste, an active ingredient in cough syrups and pain relieving ointments. The refreshing nutmeg flavour can also be used as a deodorant and to suppress bad breath.

Benefits and uses:

Internal use:
- calm the nerves, reduce tension, stress and anxiety
- treat tooth ache and mouth sores
- for stomach problems, including indigestion, vomiting, diarrhoea, and flatulence
- it is used to improve blood circulation and the cardiovascular system
- used to treat headaches
- Nutmeg has also been used in traditional medcine to treat kidney problems, and premature ejaculation.

External use:
- in ointments, it has anti inflammatory effects
- Nutmeg is used to treat toothache and eczema
- to treat rheumatic or abdominal pain

Cautions:
Low medicinal doses and culinary uses of Nutmeg and Mace are safe. Taken in high doses they become hallucinogenic and toxic, resulting in double vision, convulsions.
