MARJORAM (lat. Origanum majorana)

Marjoram is a cold-sensitive perennial herb with sweet pine and citrus flavours. It is a bushy perennial plant of the Mint (Lamiaceae) family native to west Asia and the Mediterranean, but is cultivated in most western countries with Zone 5 temperatures.

Benefits and uses:
Marjoram is used to flavour a wide variety of foods and dishes such as meats, stews, eggs, vegetables and salads. It should be added near the end of cooking, since the heat will destroy its delicate flavour.

The the oil extracted from Sweet Marjoram - Oleum majoranae, can be used as an external application for sprains, bruises, etc. Some other beneficial uses are to relieve muscle pain in the lower back due to digestive problems and mentrual disorders. Rheumatism pains and swollen joints can be helped by marjoram oil. It is said to also clear a head cold, ease bronchitis symptoms, aid with asthma, and sinusitis. Oil of Marjoram is also atributed to ease the flow of blood and increase circulation by dilating arteries and capillaries. Bruising is decreased due of this action.
A few drops, put on cotton-wool and placed in the hollow of an aching tooth is said to relieve the pain.
Externally, dried leaves and tops may be made into a paste and applied hot to reduce painful swellings.
Some prefer it as a tea which has been used throughout history for easing such ailments as hay fever, indigestion, sinus congestion, asthma, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, coughs, colds, and disorders associated with the nervous system. Some even use the tea as a mouthwash. One or two cups of marjoram tea per day have proven to be extremely therapeutic. An infusion made from the fresh plant is said to also relieve tension headaches.

Marjoram should not be ingested internally in a medicinal or herbal form during pregnancy but can be eaten as an herb added to food.
Some say that the libido might decrease with the use of this aromatic oil.
Generally Marjoram is considered to be nontoxic, however prolonged use may cause drowsiness.

MUSTARD SEEDS (Sinapis alba)

Bring out the spice Mustard more often for its health benefits as well as its flavour. Mustard is part of the Brassica family which includes Brussels sprouts, Cauliflower, Rutabagas, Broccoli, and Cabbage.

The main types of mustard are Brown Mustard (Brassica juncea), White Mustard (Sinapis alba) and Black Mustard (Brassica nigra).

About 90 percent of all Mustard mustard seeds are produced in Canada, with Hungary, Great Britain, India, Pakistan and the United States growing most of the remainder. Brown and black mustard seeds return higher yields than their yellow counterparts.

Mustard can be consumed as seeds, used as Mustard oil for rubs, and in pill form.

The Mustard seed is rich in oils and protein. It can have as much as 48 percent oil, and 43 percent protein.

Major components of Mustard Seeds are: Selenium, Tryptophan, Omega 3 fatty acids, Phosphorus, Manganese, Magnesium, Dietary Fibre, Iron, Caqlcium, Protein, Vitamin B3, and Zinc.

Not forgetting the Mustard greens, they are an excellent source of vitamin E, vitamin C, and betacarotene, vitamin B6, folic acid, magnesium, calcium, iron, niacin, vitamin A as well.

Benefits and uses:
- Mustard seeds contain glucosinolates that have anti cancer effects. In animal studies Mustard Seed have been shown to inhibit growth of existing cancer cells and to protect against the formation of new cells.

- Selenium has been shown to be beneficial for asthma, symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer prevention.

- Magnesium and Selenium are used to help lower high blood pressure, ease symptoms of menopause, and prevent heart attacks in people afflicted with atherosclerosis and heart disease.

- Omega 3 fatty acids can lower cholesterol levels and protect against heart disease.

- Rubbing Mustard oil on the scalp is said to improve your hair volume and prevent hair loss.

- Mustard plasters are used to treat rheumatism, arthritis, chest congestion, aching and sore muscles.

- Mustard seed pills will aid with general aches and pains and migraines.
- For fever and colds a Mustard tea can be made from 1 teaspoon of mustard flour infused in a boiling cup water for 5 minutes.

Mustard seeds are not allergenic and have no serious abnormal reactions.
