JUNIPER (Juniperus communis)

Juniper is also known as Enebro, Genevrier, Ginepro, Kuli, and Wacholder amongst othe names. Junipers in many varietys grow wild over most of North America. It gives the alcoholic drink gin its distinctive taste.

Benefits and uses:
For medicinal use, juniper berries are usually taken by mouth in their dried form, their oil can be applied to the skin surface and is often added to massage oils.

You can boil the Juniper berries or their oil in water and inhale the steam to clear the breathing passages.

The juniper is said to cleanse the blood and help ease the symptoms of rheumatism and gout. Migrain headaches and nervous heartproblems maybe be improved by it. Other uses include the treatment of bladder infections.

Adding Juniper berries or juniper oil to your bath water can ease arthritis or muscle pain.

Drinking Juniper Tea has also been used as a treatment for diarrhoea.

To make Juniper Tea soak one teaspoonful of dried juniper berries in 6 ounces of boiling water for 10 or 15 minutes and then strain before drinking. Juniper tea can be taken up to four times a day.

An alternate method for Juniper Tea is made by boiling young, washed Juniper sprigs in 2 quarts of water for 15 minutes, letting steep for 10 minutes, straing and serving.

Cautions:
Juniper is regarded as safe and is widely used in foods, but isn't recommend to take it during pregnancy.
Concentrated Juniper should never be taken for more than 4 weeks at a time due to the possibility that it may cause kidney damage. With any concentrated hearbs follow the instructions on the packaging.
